Peruvian fresh asparagus exports increase by 13%

Peru exported 107,431 tons of fresh asparagus worth 330 million dollars between January and October of this year, i.e. 13% more in volume and value than in the same period of 2020.

The asparagus was traded on the international market at 3.01 dollars per kilogram, a value similar to the one obtained in the previous year (3.02 dollars per kilogram).

From January to July 2021, exports totaled 62,302 tons for 185 million dollars, i.e. 24% more in volume and 19% more in value than in the same period of the previous year.

Between August and October, the country shipped 45,129 tons of asparagus worth 144 million dollars, i.e. 1% more in volume and 6% more in value than in the same period of 2020.

Taking into account the dynamics of recent months, asparagus exports at the end of 2021 would total 140,499 tons for 422 million dollars. Compared to the previous year, asparagus shipments would grow by 10% in volume and value. With this result, Peru could once again position itself as the world’s leading supplier of asparagus, as Mexican asparagus exports are expected to amount to 415 million dollars at the end of 2021, which would rank it as the second-biggest supplier.

The main markets for Peruvian asparagus were the United States (with a 72.0% share), the Netherlands (7.4%), Spain (7.0%), and the United Kingdom (6.9%). The Peruvian asparagus had a good reception in all these markets, which allowed it to increase its shipments.
