Part Four: PATS demonstrates automated pest monitoring at HIC Venture Studio<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’ve measured 85% accuracy compared to 65% for human scouts”<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Alongside Thermal Compost Systems’ heat-from-waste trial<\/a>, another technology on show at HIC Venture Studio in Bleiswijk during the Hightech Horti Innovation Tour 2026 addressed pest control. Bram Tijmons, CEO & Co-Founder of PATS, a Delft-based startup spun out of TU Delft, presented the company’s automated monitoring and control systems to the visiting group.

“We’re all about automating pest control,” Tijmons said. “You’re actually solving two problems: labour, which is scarce and expensive, since some jobs are very tedious and it’s hard to find the right people to train them, but most importantly, actually solving the problem of using chemicals and pesticides to control pests.”

Recurring challenges<\/strong>
He framed the underlying challenge in terms growers face every season: a mix of harmful insects that damage crops, neutral insects that are largely collateral, and beneficial insects worth protecting. The industry is moving toward biological control, using beneficial insects against harmful ones, but sometimes still needs to intervene with bio-pesticides or, in the worst case, chemicals.

“It’s important to know what you’re doing and when,” he said. “Years ago, you sprayed pesticides and were covered for two months, since you did it a few times a year and that was it, happy harvest. Nowadays, with all the regulations, which are very good to have for many reasons, it’s far more complex for growers to understand what’s going on in the greenhouse, and they also need to be much more precise.”

\"\" PATS-C uses AI-powered cameras to detect pest insects early, helping growers prevent outbreaks, optimize biological control, and reduce pesticide use<\/em>

Detect, analyze, act<\/strong>
PATS’ first device, called PATS-C, is a white box mounted in the greenhouse with cellular connectivity. It watches at night for larger flying insects, mostly moths and nocturnal butterflies, that tend to come in unnoticed, fly around and lay eggs until the damage suddenly becomes visible: leaves ruined, strawberries eaten, flowers gone. The camera samples the airspace and identifies which species are present. “We can pinpoint which species is flying around, but even better, nowadays we can predict when which life-cycle stage will hit the plant, and that’s important,” he said. Eggs themselves are hard to act on, but the timing after that is critical. “Caterpillars actually start eating the green leaves of your plant. The moment they start eating is the moment you want to hit them with a bio-pesticide. If you’re too late, say three days in, this hungry caterpillar isn’t small anymore.”

The system gives growers roughly a week’s notice to plan an intervention. He cited bell pepper growers as one example, where PATS has helped control a particularly common moth species fully biologically, a result that also protects the wider beneficial-insect ecosystem those growers are often building at the same time, including bumblebees used for pollination.

Trap-Eye and PATS-X<\/strong>
The second device, Trap-Eye, automates a more tedious task: manually checking yellow sticky cards, branded Trap-iD, for smaller pests like whitefly and thrips, work that Tijmons said leaves human eyes tired and unfocused after only a couple of cards, because the insects are so small that a magnifying glass is needed. The solar-powered Trap-Eye unit does that work continuously instead, photographing each Trap-iD card and generating daily data on pest pressure and trends so growers can act on standardized information rather than inconsistent manual inspection. Tijmons noted that PATS works with growers ranging from this 600-square-meter demonstration greenhouse up to operations of 90 hectares across multiple sites, where standardizing scouting by hand across different people and locations becomes close to impossible.

A third stage, still ahead, closes the loop from detection to elimination. PATS is developing PATS-X, a system of small drones, steered by the same camera that powers PATS-C, that intercept flagged insects mid-air and bring them down with their propellers, all without chemicals. Tijmons described it as “a little more of the future,” still in development with growers, but a natural extension of the detection work already running.

Biology and technology together<\/strong>
Tijmons described PATS’ broader philosophy as going a step beyond classic integrated pest management. “We really believe it’s not just biology and chemicals, what’s usually called integrated pest management, but biology and technology together. If you know what’s happening and what effect an intervention will have, that’s what makes a biological system actually work.” The monitoring side of the business already operates with around 300 growers worldwide, he said, from tomatoes in Australia to roses in Kenya to strawberries in the Netherlands.

Asked directly how the system’s accuracy compares with people doing the same job by hand, Tijmons says, “We’ve measured 85% accuracy compared to 65% for human scouts. We tested this against 50 scouts, and we outperform them.” He attributed the gap partly to fatigue and inconsistency, since scouts’ skills vary and people change roles, and after a hectare of manual sticky-card counting, “you’re pretty tired, you get busy, and those patterns are basically burned into your retina by that point.”

Why a site like HIC matters<\/strong>
PATS has been present at HIC Venture Studio since the very beginning, Tijmons said, “before the strawberries were even planted.” That early presence matters because access elsewhere is getting harder, with many commercial greenhouses no longer allowing visitors in at all, citing strict hygiene protocols against virus risk. “This is a great location to actually show and demonstrate an active, producing example of what we do.”
