British Columbia adjusts blueberry crop estimate for 2026<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Harvest is well underway on blueberries in British Columbia and the province is about to come into its peak supply period. “The season is slightly ahead of normal so harvest is expected to accelerate over the next two weeks,” says Navtej Bains of Westberry Farms. “This is because we had a really warm spring.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That early start means the province could wrap up production by as much as two weeks early by the end of August, depending on the remaining weather for the season. Weather has been very much on the minds of blueberry growers and shippers in the province with recent wet spells impacting picking, though that’s subsided more recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"The crop is at the point in the season where more and more mechanical harvesting is taking place and growers are switching away from hand harvesting.<\/em><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges with Duke blueberries<\/strong>
“We also had some Duke fields with hail scarring from recent weather events,” Bains says, noting that overall, the Duke crop\u2013which generally accounts for about 50 percent of the province’s crop\u2013is down in yield this season. “Duke is variable in terms of its decreased yield. Some growers are saying they’re down 10 percent, some are saying 60 percent which is due to varied success in pollination.” In fact, recently the B.C. Blueberry Council revised its original crop estimate to 139 million lb. of blueberries this season, an update that could reflect that change in the Duke crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also being seen is a smaller than expected berry size on Duke which is affecting some fresh market packouts. However fruit quality is good with firm berries and good color development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are positive signs though about other blueberry varieties coming on in B.C. “The green fruit that’s coming in right now looks good with everyone working on good agricultural practices,” says Bains. “On several of our mid and late-season varieties, we are hearing about more of a typical crop yield. We’re hopeful about Bluecrop, Calypso and other mid to late season varieties.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What B.C. is seeing is also reflective perhaps of one of the challenges generally being seen in the 2026 domestic blueberry season. “A lot of regions in North America have also felt a lot of weather related events so it’s been a tough year for everybody,” says Bains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Difficulties getting labor
<\/strong>In addition to this, what has been challenging for B.C. blueberry growers this year has been the availability in labor. With Canadian immigration policies tightening up in recent years, it’s making it difficult to access labor\u2013particularly labor that is willing to handle the long days hand harvesting blueberries. Domestic labor is also difficult to access. However, the crop is at the point in the season where more and more mechanical harvesting is taking place and growers are switching away from the hand harvesting often seen earlier in the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for demand, it remains solid, reflecting the supply challenges seen across several growing regions, including Florida, the Carolinas, Georgia, Michigan and New Jersey. “Pricing has been consistent with typical seasonal levels,” Bains says. “As production builds through the season, we expect the market to become more balanced, which is a normal pattern each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
