The Agricultural Office at the Karlsruhe District Office and the Karlsruhe Regional Council, in collaboration with the Association of South German Asparagus and Strawberry Growers (Verband S\u00fcddeutscher Spargel- und Erdbeeranbauer e.V.), are organising this special forum for producers to further their professional development and exchange experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can find the full programme at a glance here:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expo-se.de\/en\/asparagus-day\/\">https:\/\/www.expo-se.de\/en\/asparagus-day\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>You can find out more about a selection of specialist presentations here:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Asparagus robots versus manual harvesting&nbsp;<br>Insights into the VSSE study on mechanical harvesting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experienced asparagus grower Rolf Meinhardt (VSSE) and labour economist Monika Schulz (Ratiochron) have conducted an in-depth analysis of harvesting robots already available on the market in real-world conditions. Based on quantitative data on the number of spears, detailed quality assessments, video analyses and interviews with the manufacturers, the speakers paint a clear and impartial picture of the current state of automation in direct comparison with traditional manual harvesting. Whilst labour costs continue to rise steadily, revenues are stagnating. This necessitates a rethink among growers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Well prepared for climate change&nbsp;<br>How can we respond to the changes in asparagus cultivation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Ludger Aldenhoff, a consultant with the Asparagus and Strawberries Advisory Service (BDSE), is increasingly observing the impact of changing weather conditions on asparagus cultivation. The biggest problem here is the long periods of heat accompanied by extreme drought. The growth of the foliage during the growing season, particularly of young plants, is a challenge that now requires irrigation in most cases. Ensuring the quality of the spears and managing harvest yields is also becoming an increasing problem due to heat during the harvest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aldenhoff demonstrates how these problems can be mitigated by selecting suitable varieties, managing plastic mulch cover and adjusting irrigation and fertilisation practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yellow nutsedge in asparagus&nbsp;<br>Detection, containment and control: the gap between aspiration and reality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nils Kraushaar, an asparagus adviser at the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture, has observed the spread of the persistent yellow nutsedge to an increasing extent in recent years. This invasive sourgrass has now become a major threat to asparagus in many areas, as its growth habits are perfectly adapted to the intensive growing conditions in asparagus cultivation, yet it is extremely difficult to control. The heat-loving grass benefits from climate change and, like asparagus, prefers sandy to humus-rich soils. To better understand the spread of this weed and develop ways to contain it, Kraushaar has supervised a two-year pilot trial in asparagus cultivation and will present the latest findings and results from this trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Improving green asparagus quality<br>Is the net tunnel the solution?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bernhard B\u00f6ckenhoff has developed a new net cover for green asparagus cultivation, which is designed to improve the microclimate for the crop by increasing air humidity and reducing the impact of wind. The main benefit is expected to be straighter spears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carsten Wenke and Ralf Gro\u00dfe-Dankbar are asparagus advisers at the Chamber of Agriculture in North Rhine-Westphalia and have tested this new development on a farmer\u2019s land. They will present the findings from their one-year trial to us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note: Most of the German-language presentations at the Asparagus Day will also be shown as presentations in English.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Registration for the 37th Asparagus Day is not required, but seating is limited.
