Strong asparagus harvest in New Zealand leaves returns thin<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

A strong, weather-free start to the New Zealand asparagus season has produced an abundant, good-quality crop, but Matthew Falloon of Aspara Pacific Ltd says that this success has become a mixed blessing, pushing grower returns close to break-even.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The season’s been fairly unaffected by weather,” Falloon says. “Normally there’d be a frost that would come through and wipe out sections or something to start, but we haven’t really had that. So it’s just been production all go, really.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That matters more than usual in New Zealand, where a single cold snap often hits the whole country at once. “New Zealand’s quite funny, because we’re long and thin,” he says. “There’s definitely sections that will get weather events, but a cold southerly will typically rip through the whole country. There’s not many places that don’t get affected by a frost, but they just haven’t come this year.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is good eating for consumers but a tough market for growers, with volume outstripping demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Quality seems to be pretty good from what we see, but prices are a bit tough at the moment,” Falloon says. “They’re just over two bucks a bunch, which is eight bucks a kg, so it’s pretty close to break even.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing has not helped, with the supply surge coinciding with a seasonal dip in buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We always find that around school holidays, purchasing of fresh produce goes down,” he says. “We’ve come out of them, so hopefully things will pick up again a bit.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Falloon says Aspara sends little into the wholesale market at this time of year, so the low prices do not hit it directly, but it still has a stake in how growers fare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It does affect us for the seed side of the business, because if growers are making a good profit, they’re more likely to plant more asparagus,” he says. “But we’re also invested in all these growers’ businesses, because we want them to do well, so we don’t like seeing particularly low prices.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is little room to spread the crop out, with the options for extending the season carrying their own costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There’s a grower that picks later because he’s in the hills, but the later you go, the less time you’ve got to regenerate the plant for next year, so it’s a slight false economy,” Falloon says. “There’s a grower that does mini tunnels, but they come at a very expensive cost, and a windstorm will come through and deteriorate the plastic. As long as he gets the high premium at the start, that’s all right, but if everyone jumped into that, we’d have the same problem.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nor can the glut be exported away, with New Zealand growers largely priced out of overseas markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For us, it’s not exportable. We’re just not economically competitive compared to the likes of Peru and Mexico,” he says. “With the short shelf life that asparagus has, and the cost of air freight, which is the preferred method, more and more expensive, it does make it challenging. The industry has contracted to allow for that, but when everyone has a good year, it does make it hard to move a lot of asparagus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Falloon says part of the current squeeze is a lag between falling wholesale prices and slower-moving retail prices, which he expects to correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The guys were getting $2.40, $2.60 a bunch, but then you’d still see it in the supermarkets at $4 to $5,” he says. “Prices are coming back down now at the supermarket, so that should help to clear out that backlog of product and hopefully get demand up.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sees signs of that already, and a bit of cold weather may help rebalance things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I see one in the supermarkets doing two for seven bucks, which is probably fair, and that will still allow the growers to make a margin,” Falloon says. “We did have a bit of cold weather come through last week, so that slows everything down and hopefully empties out a few chillers and gets asparagus into people’s mouths.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
