Jumbo buys first Dutch white asparagus from The Greenery
On Thursday 23 February, the first Dutch asparagus were auctioned at The Greenery, the buyer being Jumbo Supermarkets. Jumbo bought the first crate of 5 kg for the amount of € 5,000, after which The Greenery and its growers doubled the amount to
€10.000. The proceeds will be donated to KWF Kanker-bestrijding.
The asparagus comes from asparagus grower Walter Gubbels from Helvoirt: « The asparagus is a bit earlier than we expected. The asparagus are grown in heated soil and by ensuring a constant temperature, the asparagus grow gradually. As a result, the harvested asparagus are of excellent taste and quality. This gives confidence that we are going to have a great season. »
Ton van den Hoek, Lead Category Manager at Jumbo: « We have been receiving Walter Gubbels’ asparagus through The Greenery for years and are happy that with this first crate the asparagus season is about to start again. It will still be a few weeks before the asparagus will be available in our shops again, but it does mean that asparagus season is coming. »
