“Mexican asparagus season creates opportunities in the European market”
Challenges for the Mexican asparagus sector
However, the Mexican asparagus sector faces significant challenges. In recent years, the cost per box of asparagus has risen by as much as 50% due to increasing labor and material costs. As a result, growers are optimizing their processes for greater efficiency, leading to a reduction in the total cultivated area in the region. While peak production periods previously lasted six to eight weeks, growers now expect only three weeks of high volumes this year. According to Robin Vollebregt, buyer at Nature’s Pride, pricing remains attractive despite rising costs. “Mexican growers understand how to meet market demands, making asparagus from this region an appealing option, especially with growing demand in Europe.”
Growing market in Europe
Most Mexican asparagus is destined for the U.S. market, but it is increasingly finding its way to Europe. U.S. demand typically declines in February before picking up again around Easter. In contrast, demand in Europe is on the rise, partly due to the competitive prices offered by Mexican growers. After the peak weeks in March, Mexican volumes will decrease, coinciding with the start of European production. The first shipments from Spain and Morocco are expected in the second half of March, after which Mexican asparagus volumes will gradually decline until mid-April.
Nature’s Pride is dedicated to supplying high-quality asparagus year-round by working with trusted growers worldwide to ensure seamless seasonal transitions. Their commitment extends beyond product availability, prioritizing care for both people and the environment. All partner growers are socially certified and adhere to strict standards regarding working conditions and social responsibility. Additionally, they collaborate on sustainable water management and biodiversity conservation. These initiatives are part of Nature’s Pride’s broader commitment to sustainability.
