« Good asparagus volumes on the way – we just need a bit of sunshine »
Asparagus growers in England have started cutting small amounts of asparagus. There are very small volumes coming from the outside crop, according to Julian Mead from Fiveways Fruit Farm in Colchester.
“It has been a slow start to the season due to the cold nights,” explains Julian. “Last week we had frost every morning, no frost is predicted this week though. It has also been extremely dry.”
January and February were very wet, but since then there has been very little rain. “We have been irrigating asparagus already, some rain and warm days would be very welcome to increase spear growth.”
Demand for asparagus is very strong at the moment. Julian says there are good volumes on the way we just need a bit of sunshine to bring it on. Fiveways Farm supplies asparagus to farm shops, farmers markets and retailers all under the Fiveways Farm brand.
The asparagus season runs until the middle of June. The hospitality sector is set to open fully on 17th of May and there should be increased supply by then to meet the additional demand.
