“We are now on target and in our peak harvesting period”

The official start of the English asparagus season is St George’s Day, 23rd April but most growers have asparagus before that, weather permitting of course.

Farm Fresh PO based in Kent, England, one of the biggest asparagus growers in the country, started the asparagus harvest at the end of March from the tunnels, the production has now moved to the open field crop.

“The season started off slowly but we have had good weather with lots of sunshine and are now on target and in our peak harvesting period,” said Scott Woolford, Business Development Manager at Farm Fresh.

Demand in the UK is good with most of the retailers either having done promotions or about to do them. Farm Fresh PO supply mostly retail with a small amount going to wholesale markets.

The labour situation in the UK is still problematic and Scott said they are short of workers as there are many people waiting for visas to be issued.

“Our volumes this season are looking good, but with asparagus it is always hard to tell as production is totally dependent on the hours of sunshine. We won’t know until the end of the season.”
