El sector exportador de espárragos de Perú se encuentra en un proceso crucial para mejorar las condiciones de acceso al mercado de Estados Unidos. Vilma Gutarra, jefa del Servicio Nacional de Sanidad Agraria (Senasa) de Perú, junto con su equipo técnico, sostuvo reuniones con representantes del Servicio de Inspección Sanitaria Animal y Vegetal del Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos (USDA APHIS) con el objetivo de coordinar acciones estratégicas que mejoren el acceso del espárrago peruano a este mercado, a través de un enfoque de sistemas.

El Instituto Peruano del Espárrago y Hortalizas (IPEH) señaló la importancia de esta reunión para la implementación y validación del enfoque de sistemas por parte de las autoridades estadounidenses. Este enfoque permitiría al espárrago peruano tener una mayor vida poscosecha y reducir los costos operativos de exportación. Actualmente, el tratamiento de fumigación al que se somete el espárrago para su exportación implica la exposición a altas temperaturas, lo que interrumpe la cadena de frío y reduce la vida útil del producto.

Según el IPEH, la adopción de este enfoque de sistemas podría potenciar la competitividad del espárrago peruano. Esto se lograría reemplazando la fumigación por medidas de mitigación aplicadas en origen, lo que permitiría una mejora de la calidad del producto y su posición en el mercado estadounidense. Este cambio se alinea con las mejores prácticas agrícolas, promoviendo la sostenibilidad y la adaptación al cambio climático.

Peruvian asparagus sector works to improve access to the US market

Peru’s asparagus export sector is working on a crucial process to improve access to the United States market. Vilma Gutarra, head of Peru’s National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa), and her technical team have been meeting with representatives of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) to coordinate strategic actions to improve access of Peruvian asparagus to this market, via a systems approach.
The Peruvian Institute of Asparagus and Vegetables (IPEH) highlighted the importance of the meetings to implement and have US authorities validate the systems approach. This approach would allow Peruvian asparagus to have a longer post-harvest life and reduce export operating costs. Currently, asparagus for export is subjected to a fumigation treatment that exposes it to high temperatures, interrupting the cold chain and reducing its shelf life.

According to the IPEH, adopting this systems approach would enhance the competitiveness of Peruvian asparagus. Replacing fumigation with mitigation measures applied at source would improve the quality of the product and its position in the US market. This change aligns with best agricultural practices, promoting sustainability and adaptation to climate change.
